The Chestnut Horse Bracelet, designed 1965. with enamel, diamonds, cabochon rubies, platinum, and gold.
“A horse is a horse of course. of course…” begins the humorous theme song from the popular television show; “Mr. Ed,” which ran from 1961 to 1966.
Whether David Webb knew the program is conjecture, but there’s no question that his horse bracelets were immensely popular, beginning with the first version having a brown enamel coat, made in March 1965. The Webb horse came in white, black, or brown enamel (a rare example was labeled in the company records as “stippled blue,” shown on page 155). some styles had an all-gold mane, others were diamond-tipped, such as those here, and the eyes were usually cabochon emeralds or rubies, and very occasionally sapphires. Among the earliest of Webb’s animal bracelets. Society ladies clamored for the equine wrist jewelry, as did Hollywood’s most famous lover of horses, Elizabeth Taylor, who in 1966 received an all-white enamel horse bracelet with emerald eyes.
