A fine quality mid-19th century well-figured satinwood and marquetry pedestal desk. It features marquetry boxwood, rosewood, and ebony line inlays throughout, with satinwood panels. The desk has a brass galleried top and a shaped green-tooled leather writing surface. Finished to the rear, it includes a bow-fronted central drawer flanked by four graduating mahogany-lined drawers on each side, all with their original carved brass handles. The desk is supported on square tapering legs ending in original brass castors. Gillows of Lancaster and London, also known as Gillow & Co., was an English furniture-making firm founded in Lancaster circa 1730 by Robert Gillow.
